Norma first started teaching as a 3rd grader helping new students catch up with the rest of her class. By the time she was in 7th grade, she was grading tests for her teachers. As a freshman in high school, her term paper in careers class was all about teaching.
Never one to give up, Norma continued to pursue her dream of teaching six months after her acquired brain injury. She finished her senior year of college and tried to earn a teaching credential.
Making high grades in required courses still came rather easily, but classroom management and school record keeping requirements soon made it apparent that, though she was talented at writing and teaching lessons, disorganized thinking caused by her brain injury made those tasks all but impossible.
Until then, Norma had little idea how much two brain surgeries had affected her functioning abilities. (Many brain injury survivors go through this period of unawareness.)
Once she realized classroom teaching was not for her, she began to search for ways to improve her condition, and in the process found a way she could fulfill her dream of teaching and helping others.
After studying hard for 3 years, she is a Certified Cognitive Retraining Specialist available to help you and your loved ones map the road back from brain injury. Always a great motivator, she practiced her new skills on brain injury survivors she met along the way.
